Food and a bowl of water, that's all your pet needs right? Wrong! Especially if you ask a cat. Oftentimes cats are considered to be less demanding dogs, however cat owners know that cats also require special care. So how do you make your cat happy? Here are 10 tips to help you on your way!
1. Give the cat attention: short and often
Cats are known to be independent, but this doesn't mean that it won't seek attention. In fact, many cats love physical attention and will prefer to lie on your lap all day long if possible. Others might enjoy many short cuddle moments. Sit, spin and let the cuddle session begin!
2. Provide enough challenges
Will you be away from home for some hours? Make sure your cat can have fun also when you're not around. Think of playful challenges different cat toys can offer. Bring out different toys each day to keep playtime new and exciting each day. Additionally, your cat will certainly appreciate it if you actively play along at least once a day.
3. Scr-scra-scratches
Having a cat guarantees getting their nails in your furniture, but don't get angry. Scratching is a natural need, because that's how cats maintains their nails and is also a way to play, de-stress and to mark its territory. The golden tip to protect your furniture? Make sure you have enough scratch posts in the house.
4. Peace & space is the key
Give a cat space, literally and figuratively. Is he sleeping? Let him lie down, because he hates it when someone disturbs him during his beauty sleep. The same applies to washing and eating: leave him alone for a while. In addition, provide plenty of places where he can withdraw from his other housemates, such as a cozy cat house.
5. On the cat menu
A good diet is half the battle. Therefore, put quality kibble or wet food on your cat's menu and always provide sufficient drinking water. Veterinarians sometimes even recommend creating multiple drinking places in the house. And… don't spoil your darling with too many snacks. With an extra playtime you make him (and yourself!) much happier.
6. Cat in the (clean cat) box
Hygiene is a top priority for a cat. Therefore, always provide a clean litter box, filled with fine cat litter without unnatural odors. Scoop his turds and urine out daily, change the lot regularly and especially do not put food and drink near his toilet.
7. Ensure a timely “MOT inspection”
A healthy cat is a happy cat. Make sure he is vaccinated and dewormed on time, but don't forget the periodic anti-flea treatment. Visit the vet at least once a (six) year and immediately if you suspect something is wrong. Cats are masters at hiding complaints.
8. Learned young is done old
Immediately teach a kitten what is allowed and what is not. Get him used to things that 'must' do early on, such as clipping nails, an ear inspection or transporting in a carrier. You will benefit a lot from that later on. And… don't forget that reward when you're done!
9. The benefits of spaying or neutering
Many vets advise having a cat or cat help. Why? It would give your pet a longer, calmer and healthier life. For example, sterilized females have less chance of getting a uterus infection and neutered males run away less often.
10. Safety first (outdoor)
There is nothing better than playing outside. But how does a cat do that safely? Provide him with a chip so he can always be brought home. In addition, only leave your pet outside during the day and make sure he is hungry when he has to go back inside. A bell and reflective collar prevent road users from overlooking it.
